Alternative rock, otherwise known as alternative music, alt-rock, or simply alternative (known primarily in the UK as Indie) emerged in the 1980's and became popular in the 1990's. Alternative rock consists of various sub-genres such as grunge, britpop, gothic rock, and indie pop. The music now known as alternative rock was known by different terms before 'Alternative' came into common use. 'College Rock' was used in the United States to describe the music in the 1980's due to it's links to the college radio circuit and the tastes of college students. *Picture: Incubus
